TruckWeight Introduces Updated Wireless Onboard Smart Scale

Next-generation system features improved handheld receiver and greatly expanded memory capacity.

Halifax, Nova Scotia, May 24, 2011 – TruckWeight, a leading developer of wireless onboard truck scale technology has announced that its next-generation Smart Scale system is now available for trucks and tractor-trailer combinations with air-ride or mechanical suspensions. The Smart Scale system features a wireless handheld receiver to allow drivers to maximize payloads and avoid overweight tickets in field loading applications such as logging, demolition, aggregate hauling and liquid/dry bulk hauling.

Key upgrades from the first-generation Smart Scale system include a new backlit handheld receiver and expanded memory capacity. The new backlit handheld receiver features a display that’s easy to read in all lighting conditions. The added memory capacity allows the unit to store configuration data for up to 2,000 different trailers, an important feature for drop-and-hook operations. Also, battery replacement has been simplified with the addition of a large, glove-friendly, twist-cap access cover, eliminating the need for tools and small hardware in less accessible under-frame locations.

By providing a signal range of up to 500 feet (155 meters), the Smart Scale system allows a driver to monitor loading from the cab, loading station, or at a safe distance away from the truck. The wireless technology also eliminates the need to install and maintain the additional wiring and trailer plugs required to connect sensors to the cab readout in typical hardwired systems.

The system’s Smart Sensors, available for both air-ride and mechanical suspensions, can be installed without any special tools or skills. Using two common AA batteries in each sensor, typical battery life is 8-12 months in normal use.

More information and ordering The next-generation Smart Scale system is available immediately for both air-ride and mechanical suspensions through the company’s website, www.truckweight.com, or by calling 1-877-757-7888.

TruckWeight Introduces Smart Scale for Mechanical Suspensions

HALIFAX, N.S. (August 26, 2008) -- TruckWeight. announced today that it has applied its Smart Scale wireless onboard scale technology to trucks, tractors, and trailers with mechanical-spring suspensions.

This is an important step in the evolution of Smart Scale, which was introduced for air suspensions in 2005, said TruckWeight president Peter Panagapko. "With Smart Scale for mechanical suspensions, we're extending the value of remote weight monitoring," he said. "We now offer a simple, accurate, convenient way to monitor axle and gross vehicle weights on virtually any commercial vehicle."

Smart Scale for mechanical suspensions includes three components: an axle-mounted load sensor, a low-powered radio transmitter, and a handheld wireless receiver. The load sensor measures subtle changes in the deflection of the axle. It feeds this data to the transmitter which relays it to the handheld receiver up to 500 feet (155 meters) away. The result is a weight calculation that's accurate to within 1% compared to a certified scale.

Unique Benefits

Smart Scale has several unique benefits for users of equipment with mechanical suspensions:

  • Smart Scale uses AA batteries for power and does not require electricity from a truck or tractor. For the first time, users can actively manage the weight of an untethered trailer as it is being loaded. Fleet managers can deploy their power units where they need them and eliminate the time and inconvenience of hooking up a tractor in order use a scale.
  • One handheld receiver can monitor both mechanical spring and air-ride sensors on the same vehicle or combination. This ability to distinguish unique vehicles is ideal for fleets that interchange equipment with air-ride and mechanical spring suspensions.
  • Smart Scale eliminates the installation expense and maintenance associated with hardwired scales and load cells.
  • The axle-load sensor can be used on a range of commercial equipment, including severe-duty trailers and railcars.

Smart Scale is designed for haulers of refuse, asphalt, aggregates, forest products, bulk materials, general freight, and containerized loads. The low-powered RF signal is intrinsically safe, and the wireless feature is especially useful for drivers who load their own vehicle and want to verify and fine-tune distribution of the payload.

Smart Scale for mechanical spring suspensions is available immediately from TruckWeight and leading heavy-duty distributors. More information about TruckWeight is available at www.truckweight.com.

For Lutmer Farms, TruckWeight's Wireless Onboad Scale Takes the Gussing out of weight Calculations

Grain. Dirt. Stone. Salt. Mike Lutmer’s trucks haul it all.

“We try to take every opportunity to keep our trucks loaded and moving,” says the owner of Lutmer Farms LLC, in Lebanon, Ohio, about 30 miles north of Cincinnati. The small fleet supports production on 6,700 acres of row crops plus another 1,000 acres of straw. It’s also available for outside work, supplementing the income of Lutmer’s family farm.

In the fall and winter, that may mean hauling road salt. Or in the spring, dirt and limestone.

“A class-8 tractor and an end-dump or flatbed trailer are a pretty flexible combination,” Lutmer says. “It add to the bottom line instead of just being a cost that’s getting tougher and tougher to offset. In order to do that, we want to get as close to that maximum legal weight limit as we can without going over.”

For some fleets, it can be a guessing game. Few farms have platform scales that can verify a vehicle’s gross weight or how that weight is balanced across the axles. The nearest certified in-ground scale may be at a scalehouse operated by the state patrol, and that’s no place to learn whether you’re in compliance with weight laws. In Ohio, the truck owner risks fines ranging from $175 to $500 or more if the vehicle is overloaded, plus time lost to reposition the load. Repeated violations can trigger an audit of safety records and operating practices.

It’s a not a risk or cost Lutmer wants to accept. He installed Smart Scale, an onboard scale for trucks, tractors, and trailers with air suspensions. Made by TruckWeight., Smart Scale is the industry’s only wireless onboard scale. It allows the truck operator to easily verify the vehicle’s gross weight or the weight on individual axles from anywhere within a range of 500 feet.

“If we’re a pinch too light or too heavy, we can deal with it right there in the loading area, before we hit the highway,” Lutmer says. The wireless handheld makes it easier for Lutmer to load the truck himself. “Checking the handheld as I load really speeds up the process and confirms when I’ve hit my payload target,” he says.

The Smart Scale has just three components: a sensor for each axle or axle group; a tee fitting for the vehicle’s air line; and a handheld receiver. The sensor measures temperature and pressure changes in the air suspension and transmits this information to the handheld receiver using a low-powered radio signal. The receiver calculates a weight measurement that's accurate to within 0.3% compared to a certified scale.

The sensor’s housing is weatherproof, shock resistant, won’t corrode, and uses common AA batteries for power. With no wires or electrical connections, installation typically takes 10 to 15 minutes per sensor and requires no special tools or skills.

This makes Smart Scale a simple retrofit for older trucks and trailers. The sensor can also be easily swapped among vehicles. “We’ll keep a sensor on the tractor all the time,” Lutmer says, “but it’s nice to be able to switch a sensor from one trailer to another. We’ll put one on a flatbed hauling hay in the summer and move it to an end-dump other times of the year because it’s so simple to do.”

Lutmer has an opportunity to verify Smart Scale’s accuracy almost every day when his tractor and end-dump trailer are hauling limestone into Lebanon from a quarry about 30 miles away. There’s a platform scale at the quarry gate.

“We’d have to go back down and offload if we were heavy. That process can take an hour, which means we only make four trips that day instead of five. Plus you burn a lot of fuel going in and out of the hole,” Lutmer says. Running underweight is no better. “If I leave the quarry a ton short, and my haul rate is $8 a ton, at five trips a day I’m leaving $40 at the loading area. Over a month, that’s $800. It adds up.”

He says the payback on his TruckWeight scale is a little more than two months because he’s able to load efficiently, cut down on fines, and maximize his vehicle’s payload. “It’s a delicate balance, making sure your trucks are carrying just the right amount,” Lutmer notes. “Now I push a button on my handheld and the answer is right there.”

Truckweight Offers Special Financing Programs for Smart Scale Wireless Onboard Scale

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE HALIFAX (April 8, 2008) -- TruckWeight today announced two financing programs that allow qualifying customers to defray the full cost of its Smart Scale wireless onboard scale for commercial trucks, tractors, and trailers. The arrangement is designed to help customers improve cash flow and meet payload targets while acquiring a beneficial asset.

In a program aimed at owner-operators, TruckWeight is offering a monthly payment plan for the purchase of Smart Scale, the industry's only wireless onboard weigh scale. TruckWeight is further reaching out to truck fleets by providing up to $100,000 in unsecured financing in cooperation with Export Development Canada, the country's export credit agency.

"We know cash flow is a concern for truck owners," said Alex Dunphy, TruckWeight vice-president of sales and marketing. "Our installment plan for owner-operators and credit program for truck fleets will help customers focus on acquiring what they need in order to be more productive and profitable, instead of how to pay for it."

Dunphy said Smart Scale can generate positive cash flow for customers who use an in-ground scale for check-weighing several times a week. "The cost of fees and out-of-route miles that accompany the use of third-party scales can exceed the monthly payment for Smart Scale," he explained.

Smart Scale uses sensors to measure temperature and pressure changes in a vehicle's air suspension and relays this data to a handheld receiver using a low-powered, intrinsically safe radio transmitter. The sensors produce a weight measurement that's within 0.3% of the actual gross vehicle weight, or roughly 150 pounds. Because it's wireless, Smart Scale lets you monitor gross and axle weights from up to 500 feet away. Installation typically takes 30 minutes for a standard five-axle tractor-trailer and requires no special tools or skills, in contrast to the complicated installation and maintenance associated with hardwired scales.
